Doing what they love and doing it well. Located in the Ocean View Plaza, Polanco Shoes has become the standard for Shoe an leather repair in Orange County. Abner and his father Octavio have taken the name and prime location and turned their shop into one of the best kept secrets in San Clemente. For Abner it all started when he was 12 years old. While growing up in Guatemala, instead of playing soccer after school, he and the town’s children spent a coupe of hours each day learining a trade. Follwing his father’s footsteps, the trade that Abner was drawn to was the shoe business. At this time, Octavio owned and worked at a shoe factory in Guatemala, and after watching his father, Abner knew he wanted to work with shoes for the rest of his life. In 1984, Octavio moved to the United States and Abner followed soon thereafter. The elder Polanco worked in a ahoe factory in Los Angeles for over a year, earning employee of the year honors. He then moved to Dana Point and got a job at a leather shop in Laguna Beach, called FACTOTUM. It was there that Octavio and Abner began working together in the states, and it’s a relationship that has worked beautifully ever since. It doesn’t take long for visitors to the shop to see how much Abner likes what he does. He says the best part of what he does is the reaction of his customers when they get back their shoes ot leather items, once on the brink of destruction, only to find them looking better than new. Fortunately, shoes are not the only things custmers can bring into the shop to revive. These cobblers also service belts, chaps, saddles, purses, briefcases, jeackets and custom leather work. They also sell new shoes, brands such as Havana Joe, Clarks, Puma to name a few. The quality of their work is impeccable and everything is reasonably prices. The younger Polanco says that 80% of his customers are repeat business, and after witnessing some of his craftsmanship, one can see where that number might even be low. “ Giving the shoe and leather items new life”, that’s the standard one can expect at Polanco Shoes.
